Embracing a better quality of life

Subamma P managed to reclaim her independence, thanks to the exceptional care received at SVICCAR

In October 2022, 39-year-old Subamma P (name changed to protect privacy), residing in a small town near Tirupati, began experiencing severe body pain, particularly in her back. She also faced difficulty in breathing, which made it extremely challenging for her to perform day-to-day tasks.

Concerned about her health, Subamma’s husband and two adult daughters rushed her to their family physician to understand the underlying cause. Upon examination, the physician suspected that Subamma’s symptoms were not just ordinary aches and pains, but possibly something far more serious. He recommended that she undergo a CT scan and biopsy for an accurate diagnosis, and further suggested that the family seek an expert opinion at SVICCAR.

During their visit to SVICCAR, Subamma’s condition had worsened to the point where she had to be taken in a wheelchair and was unable to carry out basic self-care tasks. After a thorough examination and a battery of tests, she was diagnosed with advanced-stage lung cancer.

The team at SVICCAR counselled Subamma and her family with utmost empathy, ensuring that they received all the necessary information about her condition, available treatment options, and potential outcomes. They planned to administer palliative chemotherapy with the  goal of enhancing her quality of life.

Since Subamma was not physically fit to receive conventional chemotherapy, they customised her treatment protocol. Instead of the standard schedule of once every three weeks, Subamma received low-dose chemotherapy once in a week. Three weeks into this protocol, her condition improved and her treatment schedule was subsequently changed to once every three weeks.

After two months, Subamma showed remarkable improvement. Her body pain and backache were healed, allowing her to resume taking care of herself along with her household responsibilities. A CT scan done halfway through the treatment revealed promising results; Subamma was finally starting to make progress in her battle against lung cancer!

Since then, she has been placed on a regular chemotherapy regimen. At present, her condition has improved so dramatically that she now attends her chemotherapy sessions at SVICCAR all by herself! She and her family are grateful to the SVICCAR team for their compassionate care which has enhanced her quality of life and restored her independence.
