Located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, this modern oncology centre is part of the Tata Trusts’ vision to address the cancer care gap in India by facilitating affordable and accessible treatment to patients, closer to their homes.
Sri Venkateswara Institute of Cancer Care & Advanced Research (SVICCAR) is one of the largest and most advanced cancer hospitals in South India. Located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, this modern oncology centre is part of the Tata Trusts’ vision to address the cancer care gap in India by facilitating affordable and accessible treatment to patients, closer to their homes.
Set up by the Tata Cancer Care Foundation (TCCF), an associate organisation of the Trusts, in collaboration with the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, the hospital combines the best in infrastructure with the latest in medical science at an affordable cost.
As a community-focused organisation, SVICCAR conducts regular screening and awareness camps for downstaging and reducing the burden of cancer.
Training and capacity-building of healthcare professionals and frontline workers for screening and early detection of cancer, is also part of SVICCAR’s mandate.
A Swasth Chittoor screening and awareness kiosk set up at Area Hospital, Chandragiri supplements the work done by SVICCAR for early detection of cancer.
The kiosks are run by a team of doctors, nurses and patient navigators who provide counselling to people during oral, breast and cervical cancer screening. Swasth Chittoor is one of the 10 swasth kiosks set up by the Trusts across India.
The work done at SVICCAR is a significant step towards realising the Tata Trusts’ objective of detecting cancers early, treating them and improving the lives of patients and their family members, and reversing the early to late detection ratio of 30:70.
Cancer is a disease that does not pick a person based on whether he is rich or poor. It does not distinguish. Therefore, there is need to provide everyone access to medicine. Our focus is on to provide better facilities for treatment of cancer. I hope we can do more.
Tata Trusts has a rich legacy of creating institutions that make a difference to the world. Beginning with the setting up of Tata Memorial Hospital, India’s first cancer care hospital that started operations in 1941 in Mumbai, the Trusts have made significant contributions to transform cancer care in the country.
In order to address the growing cancer care burden in the country, the Tata Trusts instituted the Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata in 2011 and launched the Cancer Care Programme in 2017 to deliver sustainable and enduring solutions.
Through a unique distributed model for cancer care, the Trusts now work to ensure that timely cancer care interventions reach the patients who need it, nearer to their homes. This model includes the setting up of a network of hospitals to provide primary, secondary and tertiary care for the treatment of cancer.
